The Founding Fathers and the influential men of the Founding generation were - like almost everybody else in the colonial era - almost exclusively Protestant Christians, albeit Protestant Christians of varying degrees of orthodoxy and observance. We are - or were - a “Christian nation” in the sense that the United States grew out of a Christian civilization and found its political basis in Anglo-Protestant liberalism. We are not a country with a national church or a national faith.
